About India EIS
India currently implements all three FETP training tiers (Advanced, Intermediate and Frontline). The advance FETP is also known as the India-Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Program. These programmes are conducted at three training hubs: NCDC; the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) and the World Health Organization Country Office for India (WCO India). Across all three training tiers, FETPs in India have graduated over 500 officers, with over 200 trainees currently enrolled in the various programmes.
National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is India’s apex public health institution providing science-based policy guidance and services to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The institute is mandated with prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, with a focus on disease surveillance, early detection, training and applied research. NCDC headquarters are located in Delhi, with eight branches located in various states. NCDC is a WHO South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) collaborating centre for epidemiology and training. Since 1985, NCDC has been conducting short term fellowships in field epidemiology for the WHO SEAR. In 2012, NCDC established India’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), an advanced field epidemiology training programme (FETP). In 2021, NCDC initiated Frontline FETP training.
